The colour purple

This week’s blog is by volunteer gardener, Rachel Everett…

“The colour purple has traditionally been associated with rarity and spirituality, royalty and luxury. It spans spectrum colours from the violet of wisteria to the deep indigo of iris and has been identified as a strong trend at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show this year.

“Here at Aberglasney you can enjoy this glorious colour throughout the gardens, particularly in the incredible displays of alliums. Their architectural forms pepper the beds everywhere you look but, for me, they have the biggest ‘wow factor’ in the Upper Walled Garden. The Head Gardener has created generous displays of these nectar rich flowers, with variations including Allium ‘Pinball Wizard’, Allium ‘Globemaster’ and Allium christophii. They really did stop me in my tracks when I was volunteering this week (and no, it wasn’t an excuse to put my wheelbarrow down for a few minutes!)

“By all means make a bee line for the Wisteria Arbor and swoon over the peonies but be prepared to be dazzled by the majestic allium.”
