Arts & Crafts in the Mansion: Andrew Douglas-Forbes

July 19 - July 25

The Gardeners Mug and all its connotations is a collection of 25 pieces for 25 glorious years. Having strong ties with the gardens, Andrew heard first-hand stories of Aberglasney’s inception and its philosophy, this influence has produced what Andrew calls “Poems in paint”.

A native of Gower, Andrew’s childhood memory of his family potting shed, with his paternal grandmother, is where the seed of his art was sown. Further cultivated as a teenager by the great Canadian painter Gordon Stuart (having taken private lessons). Finally, as a student at Swansea, he met his great mentor Patricia Briggs, a sculptor who was taught by the great John Skeaping, which led to his own art style.

When pressed to talk about his work, he cites his influences as “atmosphere, the passing time, gentle close tones, ‘evertime’ (Alan Curtis poets term). The beauty of Nature, the thread that binds us all together… seeing and describing what it feels like to be present…”

Andrew over the years has become a highly collectible Painter, exhibiting widely form Wales to America, his work can be found in the Glynn Vivian Swansea, Carmarthen council, and many private collections.

We’re pleased to announce that Andrew Douglas-Forbes will be exhibiting at Aberglasney from Friday the 19th of July through to Thursday the 25th of July.
