Organisers of ‘The International Garden Photographer of the Year’ competition have announced this years winners and for a second time images of Aberglasney Gardens in Carmarthenshire feature amongst the winning entries.
‘The International Garden Photographer of the Year’ or IGPOTY, brings together the best garden, plant and botanical photography from across the world with 19,000 entries from over 50 countries. This years competition is said to have attracted some of the best images to date, images which according to the competition organisers, “push the boundary of the genre and communicate the significant beauty and importance of plant life.”
Two images of Aberglasney Gardens taken by Nigel McCall and entered in the ‘Bountiful Earth’ and ‘Beautiful Gardens’ categories were triumphant with his photograph Morning Mist & Mellow Fruitfulness being chosen as the overall winner in the ‘Bountiful Earth’ category.
Nigel is managing director of his family’s builders’ merchants, Towy Works Ltd. in Carmarthen. He has a great interest in wildlife and landscape photography and has spent the last three years documenting the changing seasons at Aberglasney.
Speaking after hearing of his success in the competition for a second time he said: “When I was told by the organisers that the judges had awarded my photo Morning Mist & Mellow Fruitfulness first place in the ‘Bountiful Earth’ category I was absolutely overjoyed. Following my success in last year’s competition I certainly wasn’t expecting ‘lightening to strike twice!’”
He went on to say: “My hope is that the photographs show the true magic & delights of Aberglasney to as wide an audience as possible and hopefully inspire people to visit this wonderful place.”
The second of Nigel’s images to impress the judges was June Morning which was named as a finalist in the ‘Beautiful Gardens’ category.
Aberglasney’s Marketing Manager Ellen Llewellyn explained the value of Nigel’s images and his success in the competition to Aberglasney: “Nigel’s images have helped us to promote the Gardens in all sorts of ways over the last three years. As a small registered charity, a continuous supply of images of Aberglasney throughout the seasons, all of which are of an exceptional standard, has been invaluable. Everyone knows the saying that ‘a picture speaks a thousand words’, this is so true when looking at Nigel’s photographs. We’re extremely grateful to him and are thrilled about his success in IGPOTY for a second year in succession.”
