Art in the Mansion ~ Sandra Phillips
June 21 - July 11
I have been interested in art and artists my entire life. Throughout my life, drawing and painting were always enjoyed but it was only when I took early retirement from teaching that I could pursue and develop this interest with a passion.
I love what I paint; I paint what inspires me. It is an exciting process which is not just about making pictures, it is a journey to see and appreciate all around me.
I am heavily influenced by the sea, coast and rugged mountains of the area in which I live and these make up the bulk of my work. I love to paint in an impressionistic style so I can capture the essential qualities and characteristics of my subjects. This style also enables me to express an emotional aspect, where mood, light and atmosphere play an important part for both myself and the viewing public.
I paint in the studio but also spend much time painting en plein air where I can get first hand inspiration. A lot of my work reflects my love of Pembrokeshire, but I do paint whenever and wherever possible on my travels.
I paint in all mediums but I particularly enjoy working in oils which gives me scope to correct, add, build up textures and explore different methods of applying paint. I enjoy using large canvasses and doing impasto work using palette knives and my hands.
