The International Garden Photographer of the Year have announced the winners of their annual photography competition and no less than three images of Aberglasney Gardens feature amongst the winning entries.
Now in its 10th year, The International Garden Photographer of the Year Competition or IGPOTY, brings together the best garden, plant and botanical photography from across the world with around 18,000 entries from over 50 countries.
All three images of Aberglasney Gardens taken by Nigel McCall and entered in the ‘Beautiful Gardens’ category were triumphant with his photograph ‘Autumn Evening at Aberglasney’ being chosen as the category’s first prize winner.
Nigel is managing director of his family’s builders merchants, Towy Works Ltd. in Carmarthen. He has a great interest in wildlife and landscape photography and has spent the last two years documenting the changing seasons at Aberglasney.
Speaking after hearing of his success in the competition he said: “Photographing Aberglasney is always a joy for me and I feel very proud that my image ‘Autumn Evening at Aberglasney’ has been chosen as the winner of the Beautiful Gardens category. I feel that the photo embodies the uplifting atmosphere that always pervades within the Gardens. It’s also a fine testament to the hard work of Head Gardener Joseph Atkin and his gardening team – thanks to you all for allowing me to capture the true magic of Aberglasney”.
The second of Nigel’s images to impress the judges was ‘Upper Walled Garden, Sunrise’ which was named as a category finalist. Whilst ‘Mist over the Lower Walled Garden’ was highly commended.
Aberglasney’s Marketing Manager Ellen Llewellyn explained the value of Nigel’s images and his success in the competition to Aberglasney: “Nigel’s images have helped us to promote the Gardens in all sorts of ways over the last two years. As a small registered charity, a continuous supply of images of Aberglasney throughout the seasons, all of which are of an exceptional standard, has been invaluable. Everyone knows the saying that a picture speaks a thousand words and this is so true when looking at any of Nigel’s photographs. We’re extremely grateful to him and are thrilled about his success in IGPOTY.”
To celebrate his achievement Nigel will hold an exhibition of his work in the Mansion for a week from the 18th of February 2017. Nigel’s award winning photographs will also appear in Aberglasney’s 2018 calendar which will be available in our online shop and at the Gardens shop from the 17th of February 2017.
The exhibition of Nigel McCall’s photographs at Aberglasney will be open daily from 10.30am until 4.00pm (last admission 3.00pm) from the 18th of February until the 25th of February 2017. Normal Gardens admission prices will apply.
